THE HIP LIST INTERVIEWS DENISE TURNEY
interviewed by Linda Dominique Grosvenor Subscribe to THE HIP LIST @ thehiplist-interviews-subscribe@yahoogroups.com 1. How long have you been writing and what do you want readers to know about you the author? I have more than 30 years of writing experience. I would like readers to know that connecting with them is the most rewarding part of my writing experience. I love hearing from readers and affecting their lives in positive ways through my writings. 2. Is Spiral based on a real story? I researched events happened in Memphis during the time Spiral is written in. However, the story is not based on any single event. It does reflect the social conditions of the 1940s. Most of all, Spiral is a mystery that could happen in any generation. Nearly everyone who has read the book has asked me if it’s based on personal experience or a real life story. 3. What is Spiral about? Spiral is about choices – seemingly insignificant choices a father makes - that work together and come back to haunt his son. The story starts in the 1940s. A little girl is missing. She is the daughter of a prominent attorney. The city’s only Black detective works with the attorney to help find who kidnapped the girl. After many years of investigating the missing person’s case, the detective gives up. Not so the father. Even still a quiet comes over the small town after a few years. People return to their normal routines. The missing girl is all but forgotten. Then another little girl turns up missing. 4. It has been said that books either entertain or educate. Which would you say Spiral does? Both. Readers say they cannot put Spiral down once they start reading it. Spiral is an emotional ride. It is also a book that causes readers to think, examine their own lives and change how they use the awesome power they have via the ability to make a choice. 5. Who is your favorite character in the book? There are four characters I really like. But my absolute favorite character is Tammy Tilson, the grandmother in the story. She is unmovable! She is resilient! 6. Will there be a sequel to Spiral? I’ve been asked this question about every book I’ve written. No. I don’t plan to write a sequel to Spiral. I’m currently working on my fourth novel which takes place in Knoxville, Tennessee in the 1980s. It’s also shaping up to be a mystery. In each of my books is a strong reference to family, because I actually always saw myself as an author of family sagas. 7. In your opinion what is the state of fiction? I think independent publishing helps to breath fresh air into fiction. I'd have missed more than a few great reads had authors not taken their courage and passion and put their books on the market. I also think fiction writers and publishers will be pressed to find other ways to share stories with readers beyond paper and ink books. People's schedules are full. Some consider the time it takes to sit down and read a book valuable time they could be doing something else. We have to find more creative ways to connect readers with good story, and we will! 8. Where can readers find your books? My books are online at Amazon.com, Cushcity.com, BarnesandNoble.com, www.chistell.com and offline at bookstores and libraries. 9. What would you say is most rewarding about novel writing? You get to unleash your imagination! It’s fascinating how a story comes. I sit in front of a blank computer screen, start typing and, thank the good Lord, the story comes! 10. Finish this statement. If I weren't writing I'd surely... I don't want to imagine not writing. Wow. I have no idea what else I would be doing. I don't think I'd be as happy if I was not writing. I love to write! Visit Denise Turney at: www.chistell.com Yes you can order Spiral at Amazon.com
